Red Fern Farm opens its mature pawpaw plantings to u-pick from mid-September until the first hard freeze, by advance reservation. Tom Wahl and Kathy Dice run the family farm in southeast Iowa as a working agroforestry research site, with chestnuts, American persimmons, Asian pears and heartnuts sharing the ground. The pair consult on forest farming and have been involved with the Native Fruit Association since its founding. The nursery side is retired; the farm passed its seed genetics to Canopy, which now sells the trees.
