Pawpaw occupies one line of the catalog at Whitman Farms, the Salem, Oregon nursery Lucile Whitman has run since 1980 as a home for hard-to-find trees and shrubs. The business began as a nut tree and small fruit adjunct to a bareroot nursery next door, sold wholesale to Pacific Northwest garden centers and landscapers, until her son suggested growing the small retail mail-order side: she was shipping anyhow, and the specialty trees could go out by UPS too. That one pawpaw line is the cultivar 'Sunflower' in one-gallon pots, which the site calls self-fertile, unlike most pawpaws, and reputedly very hardy. The website lags what is actually in the field, so Whitman asks buyers to call to order and to check availability; trees ship year-round as weather allows.
