Peterson Pawpaws
Allegheny is a Peterson Pawpaws variety, bred by Neal Peterson, early to mid season, ripening in late summer, earlier than most pawpaws.
Allegheny pawpaw earns strong loyalty for its taste, which growers describe as a well-balanced blend of tropical notes, mango-and-avocado for some, a cantaloupe, banana and fruity mix for others. Several rank it among their very favorites, ahead of Shenandoah and PA Golden. Its early-to-mid-season ripening and creamy-yellow flesh make it a useful pick for shorter, cooler-season gardens.
Among those, my favorite is Allegheny (mango avocado taste and texture; early ripening), followed by Shenandoah (like banana pudding) and then PA Golden.
Allegheny - difficult to pin down in terms of flavor. Came to the conclusion that it has a very well balanced mix of all 3 flavors (cantaloupe/banana/fruity).
